The Pros And Cons Of Using Benzoyl Peroxide To Fight Acne

Whenever someone mentions that they are fighting acne, they are almost always advised to use benzoyl peroxide to fight the disease.   But despite the popularity of using benzoyl peroxide, many people feel that it shouldn’t be used for skin care.  So who is right? The people that are pro benzoyl peroxide or the people that are against benzoyl peroxide?  Both groups are partially right and partially wrong.

Before you can really form an opinion on benzoyl peroxide, you should know what it exactly is.  Benzoyl peroxide is an organic compound consisting of two benzoyl groups and an amount of peroxide.  Benzoyl peroxide is widely used as an antibacterial/antiseptic product.

When used to treat acne, benzoyl peroxide lowers the amount of bacteria on the face and cleans out the dead skin that is blocking the pores around the acne lesions.  By doing all of this, benzoyl peroxide helps the skin return to its original, healthy condition.   To those that swear by the use of benzoyl peroxide, it is one of the best acne treatments on the market today.  Its supporters will say that it quickly eliminates acne and the conditions that cause acne.

But benzoyl peroxide has its detractors too.  They mention that benzoyl peroxide is a chemical that has no business being used on the skin.   It’s true that benzoyl peroxide has some serious side effects.  Benzoyl peroxide can sometimes cause dry skin and inflammation.  Some people have said that it also causes burning and itching.  When the detractors mention all of this, the benzoyl peroxide supporters say that once you use benzoyl peroxide long enough, the side effects go away.  That is true; the body does build a tolerance to benzoyl peroxide over time.  But are the benefits worth the side effects?

In the end, your use of benzoyl peroxide should come down to how the product works for you.  If you don’t have any side effects, it could be a useful product to you.  But if you don’t see results quickly, you should try another product.  All-natural products should be your first choice anyway as opposed to a chemical product like benzoyl peroxide.   There will always be people that are for or against a particular product.  Let our own experiences determine your opinion on a product and not the opinions of others.
